A Crate is a placeable item that offers external storage space, allowing a player to store items outside of their inventories. They are crafted using materials obtained by chopping down trees or looting. chests and lockers are other placeables with the same purpose.
Properties
Once placed, crates cannot be picked up or moved. When destroyed, as with any other placed item, the crate will not return to the player. However, the items that were stored within the crate will drop on the ground.
In 2.0
The crate has a low item capacity, providing just 4 slots. It does have an infinite weight tolerance, however, meaning that any number of the same stackable item may be placed in the crate. This makes it extremely useful for holding many stackable items such as medical supplies (e.g. vitamins and bandages), munitions (e.g. military ammunition and buckshot) or construction materials (e.g. boards and sticks).
Unlike the chest and locker, the crate can be accessible by any players if you're in a multiplayer server.
In 3.0
The slot arrangement and overall capacity of the crate differs depending on the type of wood that was used to craft it. The pine crate has the same capacity as the locker, though does not provide the security benefits.
- Birch crate: 6x4 (24 slots)
- Maple crate: 7x4 (28 slots)
- Pine crate: 8x4 (32 slots)
Crates are classified as barricades, just like doors and ladders. Unlike lockers, crates made of any wood type can be accessed by anyone, so it would be wise to hide them or put them behind metal doors/vaults to prevent people from stealing your items on PvP servers.
Crafting Recipes
In 2.0
Crafting crates requires the player to have the Level 1 Craftsman skill. It takes a total of exactly 2 logs and 12 sticks to craft one crate.
- 3 Wooden Crosses + 2 Wooden Frames = 1 Wooden Crate
Usage
- 1 Wooden Crate + 3 Wooden Crosses = 1 Chest
- 1 Wooden Crate + 3 Scrap Metal = 1 Locker
In 3.0
Crafting crates does not require any crafting level. Different types of wood will produce different types of crates, each with their own capacities. However, the base recipe is the same for all three.
- 7 Birch Planks + 3 Birch Sticks = 1 Birch Crate
- 7 Maple Planks + 3 Maple Sticks = 1 Maple Crate
- 7 Pine Planks + 3 Pine Sticks = 1 Pine Crate
Known Issues
Along with other storage items, many players experience issues with the crates. In particular:
- Contents of a crate might disappear when the crate is demolished without first removing the items inside.
- Crates themseleves can disappear.
Trivia
- Crates, lockers, and chests are the only three ways in which players can store their items outside of their bodies.
- The 3.9.8.0 update introduced the ability to build barricades and other structures on vehicles, allowing for portable storage.
- Crates can hold more than the standard item stack max of 25.
- The crate in 3.0 replaces the chest and holds more.
- Pine is the highest quality wood for making crates, which is also true for the makeshift rifle.
